Interview Questions (round 1)

What is a reflex?
What all is involved in a reflex? How do these components work together?
What is a reflex arc?
Can you give me a couple examples of a reflex?
Using the parts that are involved in a reflex, can you explain the mechanics of how it works (drawing)?
Are there different types of reflexes? If so, what are they?

  1. I like your topic! My questions are: who is your target student? Is this someone who has had anatomy before? If not, what if they don't know what a reflex is in the first place? They will probably know but maybe not much further as far as the components and reflex arc, etc. depending on when they took A/P. How will you direct the conversation if they can't get past the second question? Are you going to give them the parts of the reflex when you ask them to draw it?
I like your questions. Go read mine. It's under "Pony Power." I'm struggling with what to do if they don't get past the first question on mine...

  2. I think the questions are basic, and I like the way you are taking the student through the meaning of reflex, the components, then examples, and finally you ask them to draw a diagram. In my opinion, you take very well the direction of the interview.

  3. Margo makes a couple good points, what if they say "I don't know" to any of the first three questions? How will you probe what they DO know about related content? I would try and give them a scenario in which you give them a set of observations, and then have them explain. That way in their explanation, you can see what they pay attention to, what they think is important, and how they relate ideas together. We are less interested if they get the right answer, and more interested in how they think about the concept. This is a great topic to choose from your discipline! I would hypothesize that students bring with them many misconceptions based on their own personal experience!

  4. Interesting topic Delci. Margot addressed one of my questions, who are you interviewing? Courses like A/P, Animal Phys., Vertebrate Histology, and Endocrinology all seem to incorporate thier own insight to the idea of a reflex arch. Students in biological sciences could have a ver wide array of knowledge in pertaining to this concept and it might be hard to compare since this concept is addressed in many different fashions.
